Captain Georgy Pavlovich Chernov had been sailing the seas and oceans for twenty years, but never before had he been so disturbed by one small incident. In Helsinki, during an excursion to Tampere, he discovered that his favorite personalized watch had disappeared. The very same one he had received on the day of his graduation from the naval academy. The engraving on the cover – “To G.P. Chernov – for devotion to the sea” – was sacred to him.
Georgy Pavlovich could not believe in a simple loss. He remembered that someone had wandered around his cabin the day before, and since then his suspicions had not given him peace. The culprit had to be on board, and the captain decided to find him.
Time passed, and the ship passed the Azores, where the crew replenished their food supplies. The azure waters of the Atlantic, drowning in thick fog, gave the place a special mystery. The captain kept a close eye on the crew. The young sailors were the first to fall under suspicion, but their honest faces and hard work spoke for themselves.
On the Cape Verde Islands, Chernov noticed navigator Klimov, who was getting too nervous every time the watch was mentioned. The majestic palm trees, the colonial facades of Praia and the endless blue sky created a contrast to the captain’s anxious thoughts. “Could he have taken them by accident?” the captain thought. But when the ship got caught in a violent storm in the Strait of Magellan and Klimov risked his life to save the helmsman, suspicions disappeared. Such a man could not steal.
Soon the crew faced another challenge – their ship came across a whale and drifted for several days. The South Pacific Ocean was calm and dangerous at the same time. While the sailors repaired the damage, the captain did not stop searching, but the solution eluded him. On Easter Island, among the mysterious moai statues, Chernov’s attention was drawn to the mechanic Lebedev – he was always tinkering with some mysterious equipment. However, it turned out that he was only preparing cameras for filming the ancient statues.
The journey continued: the Cook Islands with their emerald lagoons, the Maclay Coast shrouded in evergreen jungle, and stormy Wellington… In Antarctica, the captain even discussed the loss with the Soviet sailors, but they knew nothing either. Was it a coincidence, but after talking to them, he suddenly remembered: did he check every corner of his cabin?
When the ship reached London, where the grey Tower towered over the Thames, the captain decided to finally sort out the matter. While the crew checked the astronomical instruments at the Greenwich Observatory, he conducted a thorough inspection of the cabin. And what happened? The watch was found! It was in the back of a desk drawer, piled high with maps and journals.
Georgy Pavlovich grinned. For so many days he had suspected everyone except himself! With a feeling of relief, he put his watch back on. Now it had become for him not only a symbol of devotion to the sea, but also a reminder that sometimes the answer is right before your eyes.
